United Way's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

The 2024 tax filing season has begun, and United Way of Central Jersey’s team of IRS-certified tax preparers are already hard at work assisting clients. There are several options for tax preparation options, listed below. Walk-ins will be accepted at all Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) preparation locations.

2024 Season Tax Preparation options:

  1. In-Person (same day return)
  2. Online drop-off (virtual return)
  3. Dropbox locations (10) in Middlesex County
  4. Mail us your documents
  5. Prepare it yourself, request our links: Myfreetaxes and/or Taxslayer.

Individuals and families who earned up to $70,000 in 2023 may make a tax appointment at: https://uwcjvitataxappt.as.me. April 8, 2024 is the last drop-off date to get tax documents to United Way for timely filing at the Milltown location. March 31, 2024 is the last drop-off date at all other locations. Patrons unable to get their tax documents to United Way in a timely manner should request an extension. Extensions will be taken through April 14, 2024.

United Ways digital platform, Dropboxsign, will securely transmit electronically signed Intake and Consent forms to the VITA tax preparers. The client portal inside the tax software will allow taxpayers using the Online drop-off delivery to upload documents directly into their tax return using either a computer, laptop or smartphone. Patrons are encouraged if they have the technology to take advantage of Dropboxsign.

Tax clients can find more information on each of these ways to file on the VITA page of the United Way website -"What We Do - VITA". Please check back regularly for updates.

VITA volunteers work diligently to accommodate all eligible taxpayers. Clients will have the opportunity to have all concerns about their tax situation addressed by a tax preparer during the Intake Interview process, and again during the Client Review process when the details of the return is reviewed with the taxpayer.

No matter how a client submits their documents to United Way, the processing adheres to the strict VITA quality controls standards for preparation, quality review and client review for the completeness and accuracy of all returns. VITA volunteers will contact taxpayers to request additional or clarifying information when needed for the accuracy of the tax return. Drop box users will be contacted with the day and time to return to the drop-off location to collect completed returns, and can expect approximately one week of turnaround time.

?United Way is pleased to once again bring the valuable Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program to our communities.
