We believe that all young people have the right to be safe, affirmed, and supported. First & Third is HiTOPS’ educational and social support group for LGBTQ youth and their allies.

First & Third offers:

• A safe space for LGBTQ youth to meet, socialize, and learn;
• Educational activities regarding healthy relationships, gender and sexuality, STI/HIV prevention;
• Leadership training for GSA clubs;
• Adult and college student guest speakers who serve as role models and mentors for LGBTQ youth;
• Training for LGBTQ youth who want to become effective speakers and group facilitators for HiTOPS educational programs in the community.

Nearly three-quarters of LGBT students heard homophobic and sexist remarks often or frequently at school. LGBT students experienced a safer, more positive school environment when their school had a GSA or similar student club. Approximately 1 out of 10 students were taught positive representations of LGBT people, history, or events in their classes.
